What to Do When Someone Unfollows You

Have you ever had that moment where you’ve pulled up someone’s Instagram account that you knew followed you, and notice they’ve now unfollowed you?

Or maybe you’ve gotten one of those pesky updates from your email list letting you know exactly how many people have unsubscribed from your content? (59 of you left mine on Friday, in case you’re wondering!)

Or worse – maybe you’ve actually gotten a message from someone letting you know that they have decided to unfollow you with a detailed reason for it? (I love those the most).

Whatever the case may be, it strikes a nerve when someone decides they no longer want to be connected to us. Even if we’ve never actually met that person. Even if that person doesn’t actually know us on an intimate level. It feels like a rejection and it’s not fun.

I’m here to remind you: keep doing what you’re doing if you love what you’re doing.

It’s normal to want to be liked by everyone. But it’s actually the opposite of what should be happening when you’re boldly putting yourself out there in the world.

If you aren’t repelling anyone with your art, you’re not making much noise at all.

Here’s what I do when 59 people leave my list, or when I get a message from someone telling me they didn’t like my last podcast so they’re going to stop listening, or that they’ve unfollowed me on Instagram: I ask myself, do I love what I’m doing?

Do I feel on fire when I’m creating every day?

Am I proud of the work I’m putting out there?

Do I feel like I’m making an impact on the right people?

Because at the end of the day, that’s all that matters. If you’re thriving, if you’re having fun, if you’re creatively challenged, if you’re making money, if you’re feeling good, then you’ve got to let the other stuff go.

Your energy/content/work/art will make some people uncomfortable. Those aren’t your people.

Now get out there and make some beautiful shit.

I love you!
